Cook Harry L. Jacobs, Everett Born 10 Dec 1889 at Altonna PA. Entered Camp Lewis 19 Sep 1917 and served as a cook in Co. B, 361st Inf. during the time he was in the Army. He was in reserve with the 91st at St. Mihiel and was in the Meuse-Argonne, 26 Dep-3 Oct 1918. On 3 Oct he received a shrapnel wound in the right leg from the same shell that killed Paul Hill of Everett, wounded Cook Ragvold Johnson and a Seattle man from Co. C. For their bravery during this act, Johnson was recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross and Cook Jacobs received a citation from General Pershing. A posthumous citation from General Pershing was also awarded Paul Hill. He was discharged at Camp Lewis 28 Apr 1919. 2,256,919.

During the Meuse-Argonne he received wounds while in action with the 91st Division, and he has been listed as having died 13 October 1918. Private Johnson lived for a number of years with Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Martin, 2311 Hoyt Ave Everett.

Entered the service 19 Sept. 1917, and served in Co B. 361st Infantry until Dec. 12th, when he was transferred to Vancouver Barracks and put in the 406th Aero. Cons. Sqdn. On 10 July 1918, the name of the company was changed to the 20th Spruce Squadron. Made sergeant in February, 1918; sergeant first class, in Mar 1918, and master electrician in October, 1918. Discharged at Vancouver Barracks 21 Dec. 1918. 863,543. Sergeant Johnson attended the Everett high school.

Cook Ragnvold G. Johnson, Everett Born 2 Mar 1890 in Norway. Cook Johnson entered Camp Lewis from Everett 19 Sep 1917, and became a member of Co. B, 361st Inf., 91st Div. He went to France with the "Wild West" Div. and was in reserve in the St. Mihiel operations with his regiment. He went into action in the Meuse-Argonne on 26 Dep and 3 Oct was wounded by a high explosive shell, receiving six wounds from the same shell. The particular shell that wounded Cook Johnson not only played havoc with the company kitchens, but also killed Mess Sergeant Paul Hill of Everett and wounded Private Harry Jacobs, also of Everett. One other soldier was also wounded at the same time. For remaining on duty and helping feed the battalion, Cook Johnson was recommended for a Distinguished Service Cross. This coveted medal was presented to him at Everett 30 Sep 1919, in the presence of Co. M and a large number of spectators. Cook Johnson arrived in the US from France 10 Jan 1919 and was sent to the Base Hospital at Camp Fremont. From there he was transferred to the Base Hospital at Camp Kearny, and then to the one at Camp Lewis where he was discharged 2 May 1919. 2,253,921.

Corporal Johnstone attended the Arlington high school for three and a half years before enlisting for the war.
Colin H. Johnstone, Arlington Born 31 Jan 1888, at Toronto, Canada. Son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Johnstone, Arlington. Private Johnstone enlisted in the Air Service in Jul, 1918, and had completed his training for overseas and was at Pensacola FL. When the Armistice was signed. A thorough search of all records gathered in ten months work reveals that only one other family in Snohomish County had five sons in the service. That was the Morse family in Snohomish. In addition to having five sons in the service Mr. and Mrs. Johnston's son in law E. Kennedy Miller of Salem, OR. was a Y.M.C.A. secretary at Rome, Italy. Both Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone were ardent war-workers during the period of hostilities.

First Lieutenant Johnstone was one of the popular young men of Snohomish county who lost their lives in France. He was killed while serving with Co. D., 2d Engineers, 2d Division, in the Chateau-Thierry front on 3 Jun 1918. His company moved into action on 2d June, and on the following day a fragment of a high explosive shell instantly killed Lieutenant Johnston [sic]. Captain Chisholm, his commanding officer, was with him at the time but escaped injury. In speaking of the Snohomish county officer, Captain Chisholm said "No officer of our splendid regiment was more popular with both officers and men." Lieutenant Johnstone enlisted in the Army 15 Aug 1917. He graduated from the Stadium high school at Tacoma in 1912, and was a student at the University of Oregon and Columbia University.
Gunner's Mate Norman S. Johnstone, Arlington Born at Yale, B.C., 30 May 1894. Son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Johnstone, Arlington. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Feb 1918, being the only member of the five service men of the family who chose the Navy. He was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and served on Subchaser 413, later being sent to the Navy Yard at Philadelphia for duty. Gunner's mate first class. He attended the Arlington high school for over three years.

He was in reserve with the 91st Div. at St. Mihiel and went into action in the Meuse-Argonne 26 Sep. On the fourth day of the battle, 29 Sep. Private Jones was killed. He was buried in the Commune of Serges. 2,785,417. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Jones.

On 11 Oct 1917, he was transferred to 7th Co. WA C.A. for guard duty at Butte. On 19th Nov. he was transferred back to the 12th Co. and to Batt. F, 65th Art. on 27 Dec. 1917. He accompanied the 65th Art. to France and was in action with that unit. He was in the Mousson sector from 1st Nov. to 11th. Private, first class. Discharged 28 Feb 1919 at Camp Lewis. While in France he attended the Telephone and Buzzer School at Limonges, and was made a lineman for battery. Attended the Everett high school for two years.

Enlisted in Everett 13 Nov 1917 in the Aviation service, and sent to Fort Lawton, then to Kelly Field. Transferred from the 167th Aero Squadron to 27th Aero Squadron, and left New York 31 Jan 1918, for England. Served in France with the 27th. The 27th Aero Squadron was a part of the First Pursuit Group, of which Quentin Roosevelt was a member. The 27th was commanded by major J. E. Hartney and later by Lieut. Alfred A. Grant. It had 30 officers and 190 men and during September 1918 had the ace of aces. This was Second Lieut. Frank Luke Jr., who had 18 enemy places to his credit at that time. 1st Lieut. Donald Hudson had 6, 1st Leiut. Joseph McArthur, later reported missing in action, 5. "out of Control: was an interesting paper published by the First Pursuit Group. Quartermaster Everett Fred J. Jurges, Born 7 Jul 1900, at Boise ID. Son of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Jurges, 2132 East Grand. Enlisted in the US Navy at Bremerton. 17 May 1917., before his seventeenth birthday. He left Bremerton 14 Jan 1918, for New York, via the Panama Canal, and arrived in New York 10 Feb 1918. His trip from Bremerton to New York was made on the Great Northern. On 24th Feb he was assigned to the U.S.S. Delaware, and was on this ship during the period of war on patrol duty in the North Sea. Lieut. William C. Kantner, Everett Son of Rev. and Mrs. W.C. Kantner, 1531 Rucker Ave. Lieutenant Kantner entered the Army with the rank of first Lieutenant in Base Hospital Unit No. 50 on 1 May 1918. He went from Seattle to Camp Kearny , and was also at San Diego Palo Alto, and Camp Fremont before leaving for France. He died of heart failure at Mesves, France, 18 Sep 1918. Lieutenant Kantner received his high school education at Salem, Oregon; and his medical training at Portland. He is also survived by his wife, Mrs. Nell Kantner.

Charles Leroy Kelly, Everett Private Kelly was one of the American Soldiers who lost their lives with the famous Second Div. at Chateau-Thierry, while fight with the Marines. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Kelly, R. F. D. 1, Everett, and was born at Valentine NE, 24 May 1893. He enlisted in the Marine Corps 7 May 1917 and after training at Mare Island for three months was sent to Quantico. From there he went overseas 23 Jan 1918 and went into action with the 78th Co., 6th marines, 2d Fiv. He was killed 19 Jul 1918.
Francis G. Kelly, Everett Born at Hamilton, Canada, 8 Aug 1874. Wife, Alvada Kelly. Mr. Kelly served in Co. M, 3d Wash. Inf. N.G., until he went to Camp Lewis 21 May 1918, as a member of the Y.M.C.A. He was assigned to meet in-coming troop trains to instruct the men regarding entering the Camp. He also accompanied trains to other stations. going as far as New York. Having had previous experience in the undertaking business he was pressed into service at Camp Lewis during the Spanish influenza; and he and other assistants embalmed over 320 bodies in 12 days and nights. Upon his release from the Y.M.C.A. service he moved to Bellingham.

Russell Kelso, Snohomish Born at Belville KS. Entered the service 27 Jun 1918 at the age of 29 years. He served in the A.E.F. 8 Jul 1918 to 16 Dec 1918. He was a member of Co. D, 126th Inf. He was at the front near Verdun and was wounded by a high explosive in the thigh and right ear. Discharged 16 Jan 1919. 3,141,709. Lieut. Edgar C. Kester, San Jose CA Born 28 Sep 1893 at Fairfield IL. Son of the late Mr. A. A. Kester and Antoniette E. Kester, Everett. He received a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry, 28 Apr 1917, and entered the Presidio of San Francisco 23 May. On 15 Aug, he was sent to Camp Lewis and on 35 Jun left for Hoboken; left 5 Jul for Glasgow, Scotland, arriving 17 Jul; on 23 Jul he went to Cherbourg, France; to Mandres 1 Aug. He was with the 363d Inf. 91st Div. He was in reserve at St. Mihiel 12 Sep, and 20 Sep went into the Argonne-Meuse sector. He went into action with the 91st 26 Sep, and was wounded in the left side the following day by a piece of high explosive shell. He was evacuated to Base Hospital No. 42 and later to Base Hospital No. 26. On 23 Dec he was discharged from the hospital and rejoined his regiment 12 Jan 1919, in the Le Mans sector. On 17 Mar he left for St. Nazaire and embarked for the United States the following day on the U.S.T. Liberator arriving at New York 2 Apr. Promoted to first lieutenant 25 Apr 1918. Graduated from the Everett High school in 1912 and from Stanford University in 1917, with the degree of A.B.

Rev. W.L. Killian, Snohomish Born 27 Apr 1877, in Pickens County, SC. Son of F Mr. and Mrs. Elbert L.Killian, Mabton. Wife, Edith L.Killian, Rev. Killian gave up his work as pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Snohomish to enter the Y.M.C.A .service 1 May 1918. He was assigned to Camp Lewis as religious work secretary in Building No. 3. On 23d July he was transferred to Bremerton as camp religious work director; and on 1st December was made camp general secretary in the Bremerton Navy Yards. Rev. Killian attended Emory and Henry College from 1898 to 1902. He will resume his pastorate at Snohomish upon completing his Y.M.C.A. service. Before entering the Y.M.C.A. work. Rev. Killian was an active war worker in Snohomish county , and generously gave his time and efforts whenever they could be of service.

He was promoted to sergeant 16 May and on 12 Nov 1918 received his commission as a 2d Lieutenant. He was still in France the latter part of Aug 1919. Sergt. Joseph C. Knott, Monroe Born 26 May 1893 at Tipton IA. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton J. Knott, Monroe. Enlisted 9 Dec 1917 at Spokane while attending WSC. Became a member of the 20th Engrs. (Forestry). Sent from Spokane to Washington, D. C. and left for France in January 1918. Was a member of Co. E, 6th Bn. Was bound for France on the ill-fated Tuscania which was torpedoed by the Germans in February, and he and eighteen others spent the night in a caved-in canvass life boat. The air-tight seats were undamaged, and undoubtedly saved the lives of all nineteen. They were picked up by coast guards and next day landed at Larne, Ireland. They were then sent to Morn Hill Camp, Winchester England, 13 Feb and spent 5 or 6 weeks there and were then sent to Gastets in the timber of southeastern France. During October 1919 many of the 20th Engrs were rushed to the Argonne-Meuse sector as reserves. After the armistice was signed they were returned to their camps in the forest of southwestern France. Landed at NY 28 May 1919 and from Camp Merritt was sent to Camp Lewis for discharge. Martin Baker and Edward Gilliland of Monroe were also member of the 20th Engrs. Graduated from Monroe High School in 1914; attended WSC 2 1/2 years. Discharged 11 June 1919. 250,554.

He left Fort Bliss 21 Jul 1917, and sailed from Hoboken 30 Jul on the U.S.T. Tenadores, arriving at St. Nazaire 13 Aug. He was at Camp Le Valdahon from 28 Aug to 17 Oct and was on the front line until 20 Nov. From 20 Nov until 17 Jan 1918, he was at Mandares, near Gondricourt; from 19 Jan to 3 Apr he was in the Ansauville sector; went to the Cantigny sector on 3 Apr and was in the Soissons operations of the Marne counter-offensive. In this engagement, Private Kyes received a divisional citation and was recommended for the D. S. C. for keeping communication open for a period of 24 hours, when the entire regiment was depending on his line for communication. From 7 to 24 Aug he was in the Sazerais sector; 12 to 19 Sep, St. Mihiel battle; 24 Sep was evacuated to Base Hospital No. 1 at Vichy, where he remained until 27 Jan 1919 on account of being gassed. On 2 Jan 1918, he was transferred to the 63d Art., C.A.C., and served in France as an officer of that regiment. On 6 Mar 1919, he was transferred from the 63d Art. and assigned to special duty with the Emergency Employment Committee of the Council of National Defense, under Col. Arthur Woods, Washington, D. C., and stationed at Seattle. Prior to entering the service, Lieut. Lane was superintendent of the Everett Gas Company at Snohomish.

Red Cross Serial number 14,930. Miss Lee received her high school education at Yakima and prior to entering the service was a member of the Everett high school faculty. She resumed her position in Sep 1919, in the Everett schools.

Born 23 Apr 1869, in Laporte Co. IN. Offered his services 5 Jul 1918, in the Y.M.C.A. work and left Everett 30 Sept arriving in France 15 Nov 1918. Was assigned to the Paris division. At Paris he trained other Y.M.C.A. men for special work in conducting sightseeing parties through France. After graduating a number of classes Mr. Lewis worked out a special trip covering Paris, and pointed out historical places described by Victor Hugo in his novel Les Miserables. He wa assisted in this work by H.D. Cooley, also of Everett. Before entering the Y.M.C.A. service Mr. Lewis was clerk of the Justice Court at Everett. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1897, with the degree of B.S., and in 1898, with the degree of LL. B; A and from Colorado State University in 1902 with the degree of L.L.B.

He was transferred to Camp Dix, 8 Nov. 1917. The 26th Engineers was not attached to any division, but served with the First and Third Armies. Private Lindbald was in the Meuse-Argonne, from Oct. 6th to 11 Nov. 1918, and was in the Army of Occupation, from Nov. 17th to 16 Dec. 1918. He was discharged 15 April 1919. 1,168,720. He attended the Everett High school in 1913 and 1914, and is a brother of Corporal Harry W. Lindblad., who served in the Medical Corps.

Upon the organization of the 65th Art. he was transferred to that unit and went to France with it. In France, he was transferred to the 119th F. A., 32d Div. and went into action with this famous fighting unit. He was gassed on 9 Nov in the action in the Meuse-Argonne and was in the hospital for several months. Enlisted in the Naval Militia at Seattle, 11 July 1917, with Chris Gaeth, Gus Reep, Forest Love, Wallace Love, and Edward Carlson, all of Everett. Was called to the U.S. Naval Training Station at the University of Washington, August 6th and placed in Co. 1. Left Bremerton 19 Jan. 1918, on the U.S.S. Great Northern Feb. 11th for the Navy Yard at Philadelphia and on February 12th was transferred to the radio school at that place. Transferred March 7th to the U.S.S. Louisiana as a seaman and about April 1st was put on that ship. On June 14th he was sent to the U.S.S. Mercy, a hospital ship, for treatment for his eyes, and returned to the Louisiana in the middle of July. He was then transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve Force during that month. Left Philadelphia on the Louisiana for New York Sept. 25th. The ship left there Sept. 27th with one of the largest convoys sent to France which included the Transport Otranto which was sunk off the coast of Ireland in a storm. On the return trip they encountered submarines near Halifax, and sank one of the German boats. On Oct. 28th he left on his second convoy trip and arrived from France after the armistice was signed. On Dec. 11th he was transferred from the Louisiana to the Naval Operating Bse, Hamption Roads. On Feb. 11th he was transferred to the Receiving Ship St. Helena, a boat doing duty at the radio base. On 17 Mar 1919, he was transferred to the Winter Quarter Light Vessel No. 91 as a radio operator. On July 10th he was transferred back to the Fifth Naval Base. Rating Electrician, 2nd class, [R] U.S.N.R.F. He attended high school in Snohomish. Discharged 23 August 1919.

William Leroy Lucas,
Born 6 Apr 1898. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lucas, 2405 State St. Entered the service 17 Aug 1918, at Fort Lawton in the Motor Transport Service. From Fort Lawton he was transferred to Camp Joseph E. Johnston on 23 Aug. On 18 Sep he was sent to Camp Mills and from there he went to Brest, with Co. No. 543. Private Lucas was in action for seven days, but was gassed and was sent to the hospital, where he spent two months and a half recovering from that and influenza. During the peace negotiations he was driving automobiles that carried peace delegates around Paris. During the summer of 1919 he was driving West Point Cadets over the battlefield of France.

One of these brothers Axel Lundegard received the D.S.C. for bravery in action, and the other brother Hans Lundegard was wounded twice while serving with the famous 1st Division.

On 5th Apr he left Norfolk on a mine sweeper for foreign service; in Aug 1918, he returned to New York and was promoted to Warrant Boatswain and was again sent across the Atlantic; returned to New York in Dec and was promoted to ensign; from there he was sent to Cuba to participate in the fleet maneuvers and returned to New York 10 Apr 1919. While in the service was in the Canal Zone, Brazil, Cuba, Bermuda, the Azores, Italy, France, Portugal, the North Sea and Nova Scotia. Was on the U.S.S. Artic during a portion of the service. L, 13th Inf., 8th Division. He left Camp Freemont Oct 18th for Camp Mills, where he had remained until December 1st, then going to Camp Merritt. On December 10th he was transferred to the Hqrs. Co., 13th Infantry. He arrived at Camp Lewis 4 Apr 1919, and was discharged 5 April 1919. Private, first class. 3. 3,650,360. Private Black is a brother of Charles Marion Black, 126th Infantry, killed in action in France. He is a member of the firm of Black& King, 2930 Colby Ave. Harold B King the other member of the firm, was also in the service.

Born 22 Mar 1899 at Arlington. Son of Calvin L. and Lora B. Marsh, Arlington. Enlisted in old 5th Co. 14 Jan 1917, but was honorably discharged at Fort Casey 30 Aug 1917, on S.C.D. Enlisted 8 Sept 1917, in the U.S.N.R.F. at Seattle, and was assigned to the radio branch. On Oct 1917, he was sent from the University of Washington Naval Training Station to Harvard University, where he took a course in radio telegraphy, graduating 19 Jan 1918, with a rating of 3d class elec., radio, and was immediately sent to New York for assignment. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Lykens, a Naval Tender about Jan 30th; made trips on this boat to New London. Charleston, the Bermudas and Azores; there was advanced to 2nd class elec. as a reward for rescuing aerials in a severe storm; transferred from the Lykens, 6 July 1918, at New York to the U.S.S. Sterling July 28th. The Sterling was a merchant vessel employed in the sugar trade to the West Indies, and was cruising near the Atlantic coast when the German boats made their raids on the Atlantic coast, and it was within a short distance of the vessels that were torpedoed. He was transferred to the hospital at Charleston, 5 Oct 1918, suffering from influenza and remained there until Nov 13th when he was assigned to the Destroyer Jouette, by a request, cruising through the West Indies as a mail boat. He was a member of the Joette baseball team, which played many naval and civilian matches. His father Calvin L Marsh, is editor of the Arlington Times. Released at Bremerton 6 July 1919.

Ralph Dean Martin, Everett
Private Ralph Dean Martin was a popular member of old 12th Co. and Bat. D, 63d Art., who died in the service. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Martin, 1710 Rucker Ave., and was born at Danville IL, 25 Nov 1896. He attended the Everett high school 1912,1913, 1914 and graduated from the Chaffey Union high school, Ontario CA in 1916. He enlisted in 12th Co. 5 Feb 1917, and went to Fort Casey with the co. on 1 Aug 1917. On 23 Dec 1917, he was transferred to Batt. D, 63d Art., C.A.C. His death was caused from bronchial pneumonia, at Fort Casey, 1 May 1918. He was a 1st class gunner and 1st class private.

In Dec. he took 237 recruits from Vancouver Barracks to Kelly Field, and upon his return to Vancouver Barracks left 21 Dec with his reg't for Camp Green. The 4th Div. left Camp Green 21 Apr 1918 and sailed from Hoboken 30 Apr, landing at Bordeaux 13 May. He was in the Aisne-Marne defensive 15 Jun-17 Jul; Aisne-Marne offensive, 17-18 Jul; Visle River offensive, 25 Jul-12 Aug; Tulon sector 31 Aug- 8 Sep; St. Mihiel salient 12-15 Sep; and in the Mesue-Agronne offensive 26 Sep-19 Oct. The division started on its march into Germany 20 Nov and reached their post 15 Dec. Left Germany 13 Jul 1919 and sailed from Brest 22 Jul, landing at NY 29 Jul. He was sent to Camp Merritt and then to Camp Dodge and was still in the service in September 1919.
