. This is a copy of correspondence between CC and searcher. The information from the CC is usually from Cemetery lists compiled by Clara Mathias in the 60's and 70's. A wonderful lady, Clara still made mistakes as do I when I extract the information. Please document all information presented here. Corrections appreciated.
. The 5 Cemeteries I have in the database are Bay View, Bayview; Pleasant Ridge Cem, near LaConner; Swinomish Indian Cemetery, near LaConner; Fern Hill Cemetery, near Anacortes; and IOOF Cemetery, Mt Vernon.

MA(T)THEWS (Original Note)
Dated 29 October 1998
FAMILY NAME: MA(T)THEW
RESEARCHER: Lorna Marks

Hi - I've just received a marvelous photo from my mother - it's a picture of 56 G. A. R. Members - probably taken about 1920. I was planning to send this email to the Whatco County coordinator but am confused when reading my Grandfather's obituary which refers to James H. Mat(t)hews as a pioneer resident of Skagit county. All his years in Washington were in Sedro-Wolley, Whatcom County.
The only person we can identify in the photo is James Mathews and I was going to ask the county coordinator if she would like to post the photo and ask if family/friends could identify the others.

Thanks - Lorna Marks lmarks1@msn.com

MATHEWS (CC Response to listing)
Dated 29 October 1998

Skagit is one of those counties that started off one way and then went another. It was part of Whatcom but Sedro-Woolley is most certainly Skagit now.
Looking at my database I got
Herman J. MATHEWS/MATTHEWS 1882-1938 at the Bay View Cem. Bay View WA
C. L. MATHEW 1860-1940
Emma D. 1867-1931 at the Mt Vernon Cem.
There are Mathews listed in the Skagit Pioneer book.. (my copy is still missing). I don't have the Sedro-Woolley Cem available yet.
The two cemeteries were extracted and transcribed by Clara Mathias of Everett back in the 70's...

FAMILY NAME: MA(T)THEWS (second posting)
Dated 29 October 1998
RESEARCHER: Lorna Marks

Dated Sept 13, 1926:
JAMES H. MATHEWS
OLD SOLDIER, DIES
G.A.R. members and other friends of James H. Mathews, old soldier and pioneer resident of Skagit county, who died at his home here on Monday at the age of 82 years, attended funeral services for him which were held here yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church. The Rev. Guy W. Jones had charge of the services at the church, and the G.A.R. conducted services at the Union cemetery where interment took place. Mr. Mathews, who was born on September 8, 1844, at Chittenango, N.Y., came to Skagit county 20 years ago and has made his home here since that time. He was married twice, having three children, Will Mathews, Ray Mathews, and Mrs. Ethel Clifton all of Los Angeles, by his first wife Mary Peck, and two children, Josephine and Helen Mathews of this city, by his second wife Allie Everett Summers, who died about ten years ago.
Only started researching In July and am having a wonderful time - have really learned to appreciate the effort folks like you are putting into getting information online. And it's been fascinating to learn about this grandfather - he was actually present when Lee surrendered to Grant (not in the room, but he was Officer of the Day and was present at the location) - at first, didn't seem possible my grandfather could have been there but he was 70 when my mother was born and she is 84.

McKOWN (Original Note)
Dated 23 October 1998
FAMILY NAME: McKOWN,
RESEARCHER: Penelope

Would like information on the Samuel McKOWN family who moved to Washington from Indiana approx 1877-1879. Sam was born in Pennsylvania approx 1836. His family on the 1880 census for Whatcom Co, La Conner Precinct: Alvina, 38; John A, 8; Frank A, 5; Ida L, 4; & Perry E, 3...all born in Indiana. After this census the family disappears. On the 1900 census, Skagit Co, Clear Lake Precinct, I've found an Olive McKown, 16, whose father was born in PA & whose mother was born in Indiana, which would fit the profile of Sam & Alvina. Olive was a servant living with a couple whose last name (thank you, census taker!) I cannot make out. Her parents are not in Skagit Co. Please contact me if you have even the remotest information, snailmail: Penelope Repko, RR 1, Box 30, Argenta, IL 62501; or e-mail: zibby@family-net.net. Thanks!

PAYNE
Post from email
Dated 8 Nov 1999

St. Helena Star, St. Helena, California
April 1913
DEATH FOLLOWS LONG ILLNESS
Miss Laura Payne, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Payne, died Monday morning at 1:10 o'clock at the home of her parents, four miles East of St. Helena, death following a long illness. Miss Payne's health began to fail four years ago, and about a year later she was taken out of school in the hopes that outdoor life might restore her to health and strength. The family resided at Mt. Vernon, Washington, and the climate being damp, it was finally decided that a change must be made, so St. Helena was chosen as a home and Mr. and Mrs. Payne and two daughters came here eighteen months ago. The change was made too late, however, the young lady continuing to fail, a victim of consumption. For several months life hung by a thread and death was not unexpected.
Deceased was born at Mt. Vernon, Wash., April 4, 1894. She was possessed of a sweet, lovable disposition that greatly endeared her to all. She is survived by her parents and one sister, Alberta.
The funeral took place from the undertaking parlors of the J. S. Noble Co. Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. James Mitchell officiating. The pall bearers were Ivan, Arthur, and Marshall Hobson and William Dinning. The remains were laid to rest in the St. Helena cemetery
